Ajwain consists of dried ripe fruits of the plant Trychyspermum ammi belonging to the family of Umbelliferae.
Ajwain fruits contains 2.0% -4.0%(v/w) of volatile oil. Volatile oil mainly consists of thymol (35-60%), p-cymene (50-55%), terpinene (30-35%), pinene, dipentenes. Apart from this, fruit contains protein, fat, carbohydrate. Some traces of tannin, glycoside, steroidal substabnces has been scientifically reported. The flavour and pungent taste is due to presence of thymol and volatile oil in ajwain fruit.
- Ajwain is an antispasmodic, stimulant, carminative.
- They are also recommended in the treatment of sore throat and bronchitis.
- Ajwain is used as a compound in the preparation of lotions, ointment.
- The volatile oil of ajwain fruit has excellent antiseptic, antifungal, insecticide and anthelmintic property.
